Whenever I’ve asked him how old he’s turning over the last few weeks, the number has varied from 4 to 6. Clearly he wants to be up there with his sister. He’s changed so much as I look back on the status from a year ago — fully talking, self-sufficient to get his own things in most ways, doing full puzzles, drawing legible pictures. He’s really accelerated to catch up to where his sister was at the same age.
Sitting with Mario
While it’s not the same these days with planning kids’ parties, we’ve sort of adopted a tradition of the zoo on his birthday, or at least I’d call it one after doing it three years in a row. They had a good time as always.
When I watch video clips from February or March, it’s striking how much he’s changed since the start of this quarantine life. Of course we’re not totally quarantined now like we were in the March to July range, but still, he’s had a far-from-normal time for the last several months. He should’ve been in preschool at least at the start of the school year, but we opted to wait it out a little while. Hopefully we’ll send him back soon after the new year, if we can.
On his bunk bed
He and his sister have become pretty attached-at-the-hip with one another during all this time together, though. They don’t know what to do when either of them is alone, but you’d never tell that from all the sibling spats you see when they’re together.
Let’s hope version 3.0 gets a more “normal” existence on his way to 4!
Today is Everett’s 2nd birthday! Hard to believe the boy is growing up so fast.
This year’s gone by like lightning. Since he started walking before he hit the 1 year mark, he’s gotten now to where he’ll climb anything and try almost anything his sister does (he says “I twy, I twy” when he wants a turn). We’re still working on the words — he’s got a few dozen in his repertoire, and it really feels like we’re on that cusp where suddenly in the next couple months he’ll be saying full sentences.
Like I did last year, let’s recount a few things he’s into as he reaches version 2.0:
Gets snacks out by himself from the cabinets and pantry
Wakes up too early
Doesn’t nap enough (I hear he has my “no sleeping” gene)
Climbs anything on the playground
Loves the zoo and the animals
Started riding his scooter
Beginning to talk better
Just about to move to a full size bed, the crib can’t contain him, climbs out easily
Soon we’ll be starting him in an “early 2s” class at the school with his sister, which he’ll love. Any opportunity to play with new toys or other peoples’ stuff is incredible to him.
The boy is a madman. Walks all over the place now like he’s been doing it for months (it’s only been about 2 weeks), gets into everything. It couldn’t be a better example of how different kids can be from one another. Elyse was so tame, careful, and clean through the first year. Everett climbs anything, jumps off of things already, and is constantly all over the house picking up whatever isn’t nailed down. Elyse walked at around 10 months, and Everett 11. Though he’s crawled since about 8 months very well and Elyse never even attempted that.
Other things he does:
Sleeps through the night in his own room, since about 6-7 months
Eats everything we eat (except dairy due to intolerance)
Uses a fork on his own
Always wants to drink out of a cup
Goes up stairs and down slides
Climbs all over, including on and off the bed
Not yet 🤞🏼:
Climbing out of his bed
He’s such a happy kid. Even when he wakes us up at the crack of dawn, he’s already shot out of a cannon, smiling and ready to play. He loves other people, dogs, and other kids. He and his sister get into it all the time, usually in a positive way. Now that he’s so mobile, he can’t stay out of her hair.
